Andrew Barton is one of Britain's most respected and recognisable hairdressers, with a career spanning more than four decades at the very pinnacle of the hair, beauty and media industries. A celebrity hair stylist, broadcaster, educator, author and charity ambassador, Andrew has built an extraordinary career that began with a simple apprenticeship and grew into a journey that has inspired generations of hairdressers throughout the UK and beyond.
Best known to millions as the resident hair expert on the hugely successful television series 10 Years Younger, Andrew became a household name thanks to his warm personality, exceptional talent and ability to transform not only people's hair but also their confidence and self-esteem. His media career has seen him appear regularly across television, radio, podcasts, live events and national press as one of the country's leading authorities on hair and beauty.
Andrew's story is one of resilience, determination and transformation.
Adopted as a child, Andrew experienced severe bullying throughout his early years. The impact on his mental health was profound, and he has spoken openly about the challenges he faced growing up and the lasting scars bullying can leave behind. Everything changed when he discovered hairdressing. Walking into a salon for the first time provided him with what he describes as a "safe space" — a place where creativity, friendship, support and purpose came together. Hairdressing gave him confidence, direction and ultimately a career that would change his life forever.
Today, Andrew passionately champions vocational careers and apprenticeships, believing that hairdressing offers far more than simply learning a trade. He regularly speaks about how salons become extended families, creating supportive environments where young people can thrive. Andrew often compares salon life to theatre — creative, energetic, collaborative and filled with characters — where teamwork and mentorship help people discover confidence and fulfil their potential.
His commitment to nurturing the next generation led him to create ABLE (Andrew Barton London Education), an innovative education programme designed to bridge the gap between further education and the realities of the salon floor. The award-winning initiative provides students and lecturers with industry-led training, helping young people develop the practical and creative skills needed to succeed in modern hairdressing.
Throughout his career, Andrew has received numerous accolades, including being crowned British Hairdresser of the Year, one of the industry's highest honours. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the profession, he was also awarded an Honorary Doctor of Arts by Southampton Solent University.
Andrew continues to hold influential industry positions including:
• Founder of Andrew Barton London Education (ABLE)
• Creative Director at Racoon International
• Group Brand Lead for Bloom Salons
Guest Appearances at Amanda Flory Salon
• Ambassador for England for the Fellowship for British Hairdressing
• Honorary Ambassador and Master Professional for the Hair & Barber Council
• Wig Industry Ambassador for the Hairdressing & Beauty Suppliers Association (HBSA)
Away from hairdressing, Andrew has dedicated much of his life to charitable causes close to his heart.
He is a Patron of the British Association of Adoption & Fostering, reflecting his own personal adoption journey. He is also a long-standing Ambassador for Kidscape, the UK's leading anti-bullying charity, and Patron of Project Eileen, which helps young people navigate grief and loss through creative education. In addition, he supports The Little Princess Trust and numerous initiatives focused on young people, mental health, resilience and self-esteem.
In 2026, Andrew undertook one of the biggest challenges of his life when he joined a team of 40 volunteers to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, raising over £130,000 for Kidscape. The challenge was deeply personal, inspired by his own experiences of childhood bullying. The expedition included television presenter Anthea Turner and several leading figures from the hair industry. The climb is now the subject of a feature documentary due to premiere at a VIP red-carpet event in London in September 2026.
Andrew is also a successful author whose books include Shiny Happy Hair and he is currently writing a new book , both sharing his expertise and passion for helping people look and feel their very best. He continues to educate, mentor and inspire through his writing, podcasts, educational programmes and public appearances.
More than forty years after beginning his journey as a salon apprentice, Andrew Barton remains one of the most respected voices in British hairdressing. Whether working with celebrities, educating future talent, campaigning against bullying, supporting adoption charities or inspiring young people to discover their potential, Andrew's mission remains unchanged:
To help people find confidence, purpose and belonging — the same gifts that hairdressing gave him all those years ago.
